Nick spent 1/4 of his entertainment budget on a movie. He spent 11/18 of the remainder at Starbucks. Then, from the money remaining, he spent $9 on magazines, which left him 1/24 of his original allowance. How much money was left

Let b = beginning budget

 

b - (1/4)b - (11/18)((3/4)b) - 9 = (1/24)b

 

(3/4)b - (11/24)b - (1/24)b = 9

 

(18/24)b - (12/24)b = 9

 

(6/24)b = 9

 

(1/4)b = 9

 

b = $36

 

He started with $36.  He has left 36/24 = 3/2 = $1.50
