between the 2LW and the 2WH is an EQUALS sign NOT a plus

2LH is the area of two of the vertical sides.  2WH is the area of the other two vertical sides. 2LW is the area of the top and bottom.  The total surface area then is:

S = 2LH + 2WH + 2LW

So it should be a + sign, not an = sign.

Hi Susan - First, my apologies.  I thought your comment was from the student (Taylor) rather than from you.  I was thinking he wrote the problem statement down incorrectly.  Either way, it's confusing as written, and all you can do is all you can do.  ;-)

What happened to the S?

So you see the equals signs?

If S=2LH+2LW=2WH

You are saying that Surface area EQUALS (2 times the length times the height) plus (2 times the Length times the width) it ALSO EQUALS (2 times the Width times the Height)

So you can solve S = 2LH+2LW for L OR S = 2WH OR 2LH+2LW=2WH

S = 2LH + 2LW = 2WH
You can factor 2L out of the MIDDLE to get:
S = 2L(H + W) = 2WH

Divide ALL sides by 2(H+W)

      S            2L(H+W)          2WH
 ----------- =  -----------   = ----------
   2(H+W)     2(H+W)          2(H+W)

We can then CANCEL OUT the 2 and the (H+W) on the MIDDLE

      S                   WH
----------- = L = ----------
  2(H+W)            (H+W)

So you can say that
          S                              WH
L = -----------     and    L = ----------
       2(H+W)                       (H+W)

NOTE: Whatever you do on ANY side of an equal sign MUST be done to ALL SIDES (including the middle ones)
