Answer 1

-(1 - 2) = (-1)(1 + (-2))

 

Now distribute the -1 across the terms in parentheses:

 

(-1)(1 + (-2)) = (-1)(1) + (-1)(-2) = -1 + 2 = 2 - 1

 

The net effect of the - sign in front of the parentheses was to change the signs of the terms inside the parentheses.
