Question

While walking in the country, you count 44 heads and 126 feet in a field of horses and geese. How many of each animal are there?

Answer 1

Let x = the number of horses

Let y = the number of geese

x + y = 44       Multiply by -2.

 -2x -2y = -88

4x + 2y = 126

        2x = 38   

          x = 19 horses

  x + y = 44    

19 + y = 44

        y = 25 geese
