Oh, Good Grief! I trust that my old fashioned approach, adding 4 to 7, will not be rejected when I say that I believe that EVERYONE ought to be able to get 11 as the answer.
11, counting forward four times, yields 8, 9, 10, 11 as the answer, in four nice single steps beyond seven.
Another way to do this mentally is to split the additional four into 3 and 1; then 7+3 = ten, and then the other 1 is added: 11.
This question obviously comes from the H I D E O U S Common Core world, and it has made me nauseous, again.
