A rather large impact. Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) is a metastable isotope of Tc, and is probably the most widely used radioisotope in medicine today. It is strictly used for diagnostic purposes (imaging, etc). It is ideal for this purpose because it has a short half life (physical and biologic), and is easily detected by regular X-ray type equipment (it emits gamma rays). So, to answer the question, it has had a major impact on society because of its valuable use in medicine as a diagnostic aid.
