Instead of using other's opinion to determine your own, especially when it comes to history, I always recommend to my students they do their own research to determine their own opinion. It is mistake to judge history based on current opinion. We study history to learn, not to judge. If you judge history by other's standards you the miss opportunity to learn from previous cultures as to the how's and why's of what they did. Bias kills the chance to learn. Never loose the opportunity to do your own critical thinking; that is a crucial part of true independent thought and becoming a thinking and intelligent adult.

Probably because Columbus was a greedy barbaric sailor who "discovered" a bunch of things other people had found generations earlier. He was known for hunting, killing and enslaving native Americans for their gold. There's also this notion that he "proved" the earth wasn't flat by sailing to North American when mathematicians and astronomers had already proven it with science.
