First, it would be easiest to rewrite your equation in terms of S, the amount of sales.  Do that by moving the -1.6 x to the other side.

 

S = 5.4 + 1.6x 

 

 

 

The variable x represents the years after 1998. So in 1999, 1 year after, x = 1, and you would plug that into the equation:

 

S = 5.4 + 1.6 (1)

S = 7

 

 

So in 1999, 1 year after, the people in the US spent 7 billion dollars on statin sales. 

 

 

 

Let's try another, let's say, in 2005.  From 1998 to 2005, 7 years have passed, so x = 7.  Plug that into the equation:
