Elizabeth is flying a kite on a 70feet string. The horizontal distance between Elizabeth and a point directly below the kite is 42 feet. How high is the kite above Elizabeth'a hand?

The hypotneuse is 70 feet.

The base measure is 42 feet.

 

Y is the missing vertical distance .

Y*y + 42*42= 70*70.

Y^2 = 70^2 - 42^2

       =  4900 - 1764

       = 3136

Y= square-root(3136)= 56
