Math word problem

Question

Nancy worked out in the gym every Wednesday. She spent 3/5 time walking on treadmill. 2/3 of time was spent lifting weights. During remaining time, she spent 10min stretching and 10min coolong off. How long was she at gym?

9/15 + 10/15

19/15     time spent walking/lifting

I hope you know how to do equations. I also think that you mean that she spent 2/3 of the remaining time on weight lifting. If my assumptions are right, you would sole the problem as follows.

 

Let t = the total time of the workout.

this makes (3/5)t  the time on the treadmill.

this makes 2/5 the remaining time

this makes (2/3)(2/5)t the time spent on weights.

then 20 minutes stretching and cooling.

 

The equation then is

(3/5)t + (2/3)(2/5)t + 20 = t

treadmill + weights + cooldown = total workout time.

3/5 t + 4/15 t + 20 = t  multiply everything by the cimmon denominator of 15 to get

9t + 4t + 300 = 15t

              300 = 2t

              150 = t

 

So she worked out for 150 minutes (2.5 hours...I'm tired just thinking about it)

 

Let's check.

3/5 of 150 is 90 minutes leaving over 60 minutes.

2/3 of 60 minutes is 40 minutes

 

So 90 minutes + 40 minutes + 20 minutes is a total of 150 minutes.
