One number is 9 times larger than another. The difference of their reciprocal S is 1. Determine to two numbers

Let x = one of the numbers.  The other number is 9x.

 

Given:

 

1/x - 1/(9x) = 1

 

Solve for x.

 

Multiply both sides by x and get

 

1 - 1/9 = x

 

x = 8/9

 

The other number is 9x = 9(8/9) = 8.
