I'm not sure if you have the entire question written here. If you do, then:
Define your terms:
x= volume of plastic using Bottle Cap A, per bottle
y= volume of plastic using Bottle Cap B, per bottle
y=x-.4414
Come up with an equation:
Volume of plastic saved per bottle = Volume of plastic using Bottle Cap A - Volume of plastic using Bottle Cap B
Plug in defined terms:
Volume of plastic saved per bottle=x-y
Now, write it terms of x:
Volume of plastic saved per bottle=x- (x-.4414)
Now, for 50 billion water bottles
Volume saved per 50 billion water bottles= (volume of plastic saved per bottle)(50 billion)
Re-written with our unknown "x":
volume saved per 50 billion water bottles= (x-(x-.4414))(50 billion)
In order to write the answer in scientific notation, move the decimal place to the left so that only one number is on the left of the decimal point. However many times you moved the decimal point to the left, multiply you answer by 10 taken to the power of that number.
For example:
50 billion written out is 50,000,000,000
In scientific notation 5.0x1010 since the decimal place was moved to the left 10 times in order to get the five to be the only number in front of it.
In order to solve, you will need to know the original volume of plastic from bottle cap A. I would also be sure that .4414 is the amount of volume saved by using bottle cap B, and not the percent of plastic saved by using bottle cap B.
Let me know if this makes sense!
