are four fifths as many sailors as soldiers?

the number of sailors = (4/5)x

 

x + (4/5)x = 27

 

5x + 4x = 135

 

9x = 135

 

x = 15

 

There are 15 soldiers and (4/5) * 15 = 60/5 = 12 sailors
