Don't follow step 3.
 
(5-x)/x = (5/x) - (x/x) = (5/x) - 1
 
So it's:
 
5/x - 7/x = -3/4 + 1
 
-2/x = 1/4
 
-8 = x
 
Check:
 
(5-(-8))/(-8) + 3/4 = 7/(-8)
-13/8 + 6/8 = -7/8
-7/8 = -7/8
