Question

a metal wire 40cm long is cut in two and each piece is bent to form a square. If the sum of their areas is 58cm2, how long is each piece?

The lengths of the two pieces are x and 40 - x

(x/4)² is the area of the first

(40 - x)² is the area of the second

 

(x/4)² + (40 - x)² = 58
