The length of a new rectangular playing field is 9 yards longer than quadruple the width. If the perimeter of the rectangular playing field is 418 yards, what are its dimensions?

Let L be the length and W is the width.

 

If the length is 9 yards longer than quadruple the width, then L = 4W + 9

 

So the perimeter is

P = L + W + L + W

P = 4W + 9 + W + 4W + 9 + W

P = 10W + 18

418 = 10W + 18

400 = 10W

40 = W

The width is 40.

 

The length is then

L  = 4W + 9

L = 4(40) + 9

L = 160 + 9

L = 169

 

The length is 169
