The area of a rectangular wall of a barn is 224 square feet. Its length is 12 feet longer than twice its width. Find the length and width of the wall of the barn.

  Area = Length x Width

 

 224 = (2w+12)w

 

224 = 2w^2 + 12w

 

0  = 2w^2 + 12w - 224

 

0 = w^2 + 6w - 112

 

0 = ( w     +     14 )(w   -        8 )      

 

  

w+14=0 --> w = -14  <--  no good! width cannot be negative

 

w-8=0 --> w=8

 

Width is 8. Length is is 2*8 +12 = 16 +12 = 28

 

check : Area = 28 x 8 = 224
