The wording of this is very suspect--I hope this is not exactly what your teacher assigned.

 

The first set of data means that in 9(16) = 144 fireplace days, 12 cu yd of wood was consumed, i.e. 1/12 cu yd per fireplace day.

 

At the same rate, under identical conditions, then we can write a proportion:

12 cu yd/144 fireplace days = 9 cu yd/(12d) fireplace days.  Therefore d = 9 days.
