    Length that    is     two more than    twice the width... 

     Length          =             2   +             2    * w

 

 

How to find the area..... length x width

 

                           60 = Area = length x width

                                            = (2w+2) x w

 

                          60 = (2w+2)w   <--- here's the equation

 

                         Didn't say to solve it. Roots are irrational, will need quadratic formula because it doesn't factor

The width is your unknown (or x). 

 

The formula for the area of a rectangle is 

A= length x width

Let the width be 'w' 

 

Length ∴ is 2w + 2

 

So, w x (2w + 2) = 60 => 2w² + 2w - 60 = 0

 

Or, w² + w - 30 = 0

 

(w - 5)(w + 6) = 0

 

Solving for w, we get w = 5 or -6.

 

It can't be a -ve number, so width = 5 and length = 12.
