A room's walls are being painted purple while its ceiling is being painted white. Partway through painting the room, I run out of paint.

The room's height is 8ft, width of 10ft, length of 12ft. There is 125 ft2 left to paint. Each can of paint covers 40 ft2. How many cans do I need to buy?

What do you mean by "partway." Did you finish painting anything? How much paint did you have to begin? You mention two colors yet do not say how much of each you have used.
