If you still needed help with this question from yesterday here's how you divide fractions by whole numbers.

 

In this problem you would need to divide 1/2 by 3 so...

---   ÷   3   

 2

 

 1                      1
---             =     ---
 2    *   3         6

 

When multiplying fractions by whole numbers you just multiple the denominator by the number.

Then you would simplify the fraction but in this case 1/6 is as simple as it would get.

1/2 pound = 3X, where x represents each persons share of peanuts

X= (1/2)/3, divide both sides by 3 to isolate x.  Both 2 and 3 are in the denominator so they must multiply together.

X= 1/6 pound of peanuts

1/2  DIVIDED BY 3, OR 1/2 x 1/3 = 1/6 pound each

 

to check: 1/6  + 1/6  + 1/6  =  3/6  or 1/2 pound
