Two angles are supplementary. One angle is 4 degrees° less than three times the other. Find the measures of the angles.

If one angle = X

The second angle = three times X - 4 degrees or,

3x - 4

 

Supplementary angles = 180 degrees, therefore,

X + (3x - 4) = 180

4X - 4 = 180

4X = 184

X = 46

3X - 4 = 3 times 46 - 4 or 3 times 42 = 134

46 + 134 = 180 degrees
