Champlain and the native tribes worked together in two very important ways. First, Champlain helped establish the fur trade between the Indians and France. Second, in order to make the fur trade safe, Champlain agreed to help the tribes he was trading with fight their enemies, namely the Iroquois Indians. Because Champlain and his French troops had firearms, he was able to defeat the Iroquois Indian quickly. That made the Indians he was trading with feel safe and rely on him for their defense. In exchange for that, the Indians helped Champlain build many settlements along the St. Lawrence River in what is now Canada, but which was called New France at that time. So the Indians and Champlain worked together for the fur trade and for the defense of the native tribes, and that cooperation helped to build New France, which is now called Canada.
