matts watering can holds 4.1 liters of water. He watered 6 cactus plants. He used 350 ml of water for each plant. How many liters of water are left in his watering can?

Hi Ashley!  One of the ways you could tackle this problem is to start by converting the liters into milliliters.

 

1.  Since there are 1,000 milliliters in a liter, the watering can holds 4,100 milliliters of water (4.1 times 1000).

2.  Matt used 350 of those milliliters on each of 6 plants.  So, multiply 350 by 6, then subtract that product from 4100.

3.  Then, divide the result by 1000 to convert the measurement back into liters.

 

    ( 4100 - ( 350 * 6 )) ÷ 1000

1ml = 0.001L

therefore 350ml = 0.35L (used per plant)

 

To find the total amount of water used, we'll multiply 6 by 0.35L

 

6 × 0.35L = 2.1 L

 

Now subtract the total amount of water used from the Original quantity (4L)

 

4L - 2.1L = 1.9L

 

So, 1.9Liters of water is remaining.

As you look at this problem, you need to take in the primary information:

 

The total volume of the watering can: 4.1 Liters

Number of mL in L: 1000mL=1L

Watering can total volume in mL: 4.1Lx1000=4100mL

Total water used: 350mL/plant x 6 plants=2100mL

 

Then you simply subtract the amount used from the total amount available and convert back to the original unit of measurement for the total. 

As follows:

 

4100mL-2100mL=2000mL

2000mL/1000=2.0L
