One number exceeds another by 7 the sum of the numbers is 47. What are the numbers.

Let's call the smaller number x. then, the other number will be equal to x+7

Their sum is 47, so we can write

x + (x+7) = 47

2x + 7 = 47

2x = 40

x = 20 smaller number

20+7 = 27 the other number
