Blitzkreig means "lightning war." Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and started WWII. The German military, especially tactical airpower and mechanized infantry (panzers), advanced very rapidly and devastated Poland's military in a very short time. Except for some stiff but unsuccessful resistance by the defenders of Warsaw, the country fell to Germany quickly. Hence the term "lightning war" or blitzkrieg was adopted to describe such a rapid military assault. Germany would repeat similar successes against several other countries, culminating in the rapid fall of France in the summer of 1940.
