Question

two welders worked total 60 hours on project. one welder made $32/h other welder $41/h. if the gross of both welder gross $2172.00. hour many hours did each welder work?

Let x = Hours worked by 1st welder at $32/hr

Let y = Hours worked by 2nd welder at $41/hr

 

x + y = 60              {equation 1}

32x + 41y = 2172   {equation 2}

 

Let's use elimination.  Multiply equation 1 by -32

and add the equations to eliminate x and solve for y.

 

-32x - 32y = -1920

32x + 41y =   2172

------------------------

         9y = 252

          y = 28 hours

 

x = 60-28 = 32 hours

 

The $32/hr welder worked 32 hours

The $41/hr welder worked 28 hours
