A mechanic pay for working a 40 hour week is $640. At the same rate of pay,how much would the mechanic earn for working a 50 hour week?

Let's first calculate the hourly rate = $640/40 hours = $16/hour.  Now, if the mechanic works for 50 hours, the pay would be (50 hours)($16/hour) = $800.

You can also set up a ratio:
 
640 is to 40 as x is to 50
 
640/40 = x/50
40x = 640(50)
x = 640(50)/40 = $800
