x+y = 47

 

so, y = 47-x

8 = 0.10x + (47-x)0.25

8 = 0.10x + 11.75 - 0.25x

8 = 11.75 - 0.15x

0.15x = 11.75 - 8

x = 3.75/0.15 = 25

 

Therefore, there are 25 dimes, and 47-25 quarters.
