at a concert , 2/5 of the people were men. there were 3 times as many women as children. if there were 45 more men than children , how many people were there at the concert?

Answer 1

Let the number of women be W.

Let the total number be T.

So the number of men be = (2W)/5

Number of children = T - (W - 2W/5)

=T - 3W/5

There are 45 more men than children,  so:

2W/5 - (T - 3W/5) = 45

W-T = 45.       (1)

There are also 3 times more women than children, so

W = 3 (T - 3W/5)

W = 3T - 9W/5

5W = 15T - 9W

14W - 15T  = 0.         (2)
