Alice baked a certain amount of pies. She gave 1/8 to her friends and 1/4 of the remainder to her neighbors.She was left with 63 pies. How many pies did she start with?

 Let x be the total pies

 so we have x *(1-1/8)*(1-1/4)=63

 simplify, x(7/8)(3/4)=63

(x)(21/32)=63   

then multiply both sides by (32/21)

we have, x=63*(32/21)=96 pies

 

check, Alice first gave 1/8 to her friend or 96*(1/8)= 12 pies

now she still had 96-12=84 pies

then she gave 1/4 of the remaining to her neighbors, 84*(1/4)=21

now she had 84-21=63 pies remaining.
