An irregular shape mineral has a density of 1.196 g/cm³. What is the mass of this mineral when placed in a graduated cylinder containing 200.mL of water, water rises to 208.6 mL?

Density:  ρ = m/V ⇒ m = ρV

 

m = mass

 

V = volume = change in level of the water, assuming the mineral is fully immersed

 

ρ = 1.196 g/cm³

 

V = (208.6 - 200.0) mL = 8.6 cm³

 

m = ρV = (1.196 g/cm³)(8.6 cm³) ≅ 10.29 g
