Need to check my work

 

A bag of candy is shared among a group of friends.  If each friend gets 3 candies, there will be 3 extra candies left over.  If each friend gets 5 candies, three will be 7 short.  How many friends are in the group?

Answer 1

Let X = Number of friends

Y = Number of candies

 

Y = 3X +3 

 and Y = 5X -7

Equating

5X - 7 = 3X +3

 

2X = 10

X = 5 = Number of friends

Y = 3X + 3 = 18 = Number of candies
