Students are lined up on a playground. If 14 students are lined up in a row, there will be five students left out. If 17 students are lined up, they will be 4 students short. How many rows of students are there in the first case?

Y = Total number of students
14 X = Y -5 .... Eq 1
17 X = Y +4.... Eq 2 from these Equations
14 X = 17X - 4 - 5
or 3X = 9
X = 3 = Number of rows
17 * 3 = Y +4
Y = 51 - 4 = 47 Total Number of Students
