One of the points on a graph is (4,-2). The slope of that line is -2/3. What is the other point?

I really don't understand this. I need help!! I stink at algebra sometimes:/ but sometimes my brain works and I understand things but this confuses me. I swear we didn't learn this in class but whatever:)

In a coordinate system

 

 

 Locate ( 4, -2)

 

 Come 2 points down -2- 2 = - 4

 

   3 units right (4 + 3 ) = 7

 

   ( 7, -4 ) is your 2nd point

 

       ( 7 ,-4 )  ( 4,- 2)

 

         m = -2 - ( -4 ) = - 2/ 3

                  4 - 7

My guess is that you are looking for the y-intercept.

Point-slope formula is...

y-y₁=m(x-x₁)

m is the slope.

y--2=(-2/3)(x-4)

Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number...

y+2=(-2/3)(x-4)

Multiplying a negative number by a negative number has a positive result...

y+2=(-2/3)x+(8/3)

y+(6/3)=(-2/3)x+(8/3)

Let's subtract 6/3 from both sides...

y+(6/3)-(6/3)=(-2/3)x+(8/3)-(6/3)

y=(-2/3)x+(2/3)

The equation is now in the format of...

y=mx+b

m is the slope.

b is the y-intercept, the value of y when x=0.

(0,2/3)

Hi Jade,

          You may be confusing yourself somewhat. the point, slope form for a line is

 

                           y-y₁ = m(x-x₁) you have been given x₁ and y₁  (4,-2) and the slope m=-2/3 all you have to do is substuite the numerical values i.e. (y+2) = -2/3(x-4) and simplify. this give you the equation for the line that passes through the given point with the given slope. Using this equation you can calculate any other point on the line.
