Hi Sue, let b represent the number of bears and d represent the number of dolls. The total number of bears and dolls is 33.
Then:
b + d = 33
But, there are twice as many bears as dolls, or b = 2d.
Substitute in the first equation:
b + d = 33
Substitute for the number of bears, b = 2d:
2d + d = 33
Solve for d. Once you know how many dolls Sally has, you can find out how many bears she has.
