They tend to move westerward because the easterly winds (winds that move from east to west) dictate their movements in that region.  Are you familiar with the term Coriolis Effect?  In different regions of the Earth, the wind patterns differ.

 

Wind patterns affects the movements of all storms, especially clouds.
