The Concordia theatre contains 500 seats and the ticket prices for a recent play were  $43 for adults and  $28 for children. For one sold out matinee if the total proceeds were  $16,805 how many of each type of ticket were sold?

Let X = No. of tickets sold to adults

      Y= No. of tickets sold for children

 

Given X+Y = 500

and 43X + 28Y = 16805 = Total proceeds

 

Solving these two equations

15Y = 21500 - 16805 =4695

Y = 4695/15 = 313

Substituting value of Y in  X+Y = 500

 X = 187

The tickets sold are 187 for adults and 313 for children
