If the ratio is 1/4 to 2, there will be 8 times as much water as there is concentrate.

That is:

W = 8C

The water and concentrate combined add up to 18 cups.

W + C = 18

Substitute 8C for W:

8C + C = 18

9C = 18

C = 2

 

W=8C = (8)(2)

W = 16
