Here are the six types of chemical reactions and keys to remembering them.
Disclaimer: This answer includes only one chemical equation but is meant to help you identify them and learn to write your own by looking at examples and "look like" equations.
Hope you find this helpful.
1. Combustion - (often associated with burning) when oxygen combines with another compound to form water and carbon dioxide.
Ex. - Methane burned in oxygen.
2. Synthesis (Also known as direct combination) - 2+ compounds come together to form a more complex one.
Looks like: A + B -> AB
3. Decomposition (also known as analysis) - a complex molecule breaks down into its components.
Ex. - The electrolysis of water into hydrogen and oxygen.
4. Single Displacement (also known as substitution) - one element trades places with another.
Looks like: A + BC -> AC + B
5. Double Displacement (also known as metathesis) - when the anions (Negatively charged) and cations (Cats are positive) of two different molecules switch places.
Looks like: AB + CD -> AD + CB
6. Acid/Base Neutralization- kind of double displacement reaction, the H+ ion in acid reacts with the OH- ion in a base, causing the formation of water
Ex. - HBr + NaOH -> NaBr + H2O
