Let X = bags of  candy and Y = bags of cookies. Then

 

Y = X + 5

$5X + $2.5Y = $42.50

or

 

$5X + $2.5(X + 5) = $42.50

$5X + $2.5X + $12.5 = $42,50

$7.5X = $42.50 - $12.5 = $30

X = $30 / $7.5 = 4

 

Now find Y and prove that the total sales amount to $42.50
