Consider how you would test your hypothesis. Remember, the test must allow for showing the hypothesis to be right or wrong. Formulate a test idea using sneezing, handwashing, wearing a mask.

Hi Sam,
For Step 3, to design a valid test for the hypothesis that the common cold can spread through sneezing, especially when someone doesn’t wash their hands or wear a mask, I’d set up a simple experiment using safe materials to simulate germs.
I’d create four test groups:
- Group A: No mask, no handwashing after sneezing
- Group B: Wears a mask, but doesn’t wash hands
- Group C: No mask, but washes hands
- Group D: Wears a mask and washes hands properly
To simulate a sneeze, we could use something like a spray bottle with colored water or a UV-reactive solution. Each “sneeze” would be aimed toward a surface or a nearby object. Then we’d check how far the droplets go or what surfaces get “contaminated.” For handwashing, we could also test if “germs” transfer to objects after touching them.
This setup would help us visually compare how well masks and handwashing prevent the spread. That way, we’re testing if the original hypothesis is supported or not, based on observable results.

what are you looking for Sam? A whole 10 page experimental design or a general outline? Testing this hypothesis is not easy as there are several viruses, hygiene issues, and other variables including working with humans. If you want to test the hypothesis that the common cold is caused by viruses and enhanced by poor hand hygiene and non mask wearing there are several things you need to look at. 1) Pick a single virus (e.g. influenza) 2) handwashing as a single variable and 3) mast wearing as a single variable and 4) maybe both as another variable. Things you need to consider is the study population (age, gender, pre-existing conditions to name a few). You also need to consider the time frame that you study might need. You also need to consider how you will define the common cold - what symptoms you will consider. This study is difficult to do as it will be super hard for you to control everything (how often they wash hands and wear a mask, etc.). Anyhow, there is so much more...but this is a good start for you to think about.03/07/25
