Find two numbers if their difference is -4 and their sum is -8

Let the 2 numbers be m and n.

 

m - n = -4

m + n = -8

 

Add the 2 equations and get

 

2m = -12

m = -12/2 = -6

 

Then from the first equation,

 

-6 - n = -4

n = -(-4 + 6) = -2
