Hi Michelle,
This is a subtraction problem . . . if you start with 10 gallons of paint and you use 3 gallons, then you have 10 - 3 = 7 gallons remaining
So to solve this problem --> 2 1/2 - 2/4 = remaining paint
Change the mixed fraction into an improper fraction--> 5/2
Multiply the top and bottom by 2 so you have a common denominator --> 10/4
Now subtract--> 10/4 - 2/4 = 8/4 which equals 2 gallons.
