How much paint do i have left?

I bought 2 1/2 gallons  of paint but i only used 2/4 gallons of paint.

Hi Michelle,

 

This is a subtraction problem . . . if you start with 10 gallons of paint and you use 3 gallons, then you have 10 - 3 = 7 gallons remaining

 

So to solve this problem --> 2 1/2 - 2/4 = remaining paint

 

Change the mixed fraction into an improper fraction--> 5/2

 

Multiply the top and bottom by 2 so you have a common denominator --> 10/4

 

Now subtract--> 10/4 - 2/4 = 8/4 which equals 2 gallons.

A->  Paint you have in (gallons) = 2 1/2 =5/2

B->  Paint you used in (gallons)= 2/4 =1/2

 

Paint you are left with in (gallons) = A - B

                                                  = 5/2 - 1/2

                                                  = 4/2

                                                  = 2 gallons

Sorry sir , if I am not wrong

 

2 1/2 =2.5

and 2/4 =0.5

Thus Difference = 2.5- 0.5 = 2.00 Left
