A newspaper carrier has $4.10 in change. He has 4 more quarters than dimes but 3 times as many nickels as quarters. How many of each coin does he have.

Q = D + 4

 

N = 3 Q

 

5N + 10D + 25Q = 410

 

5(3 Q) + 10(Q-4) + 25Q = 410

 

15Q + 10Q - 40 + 25Q = 410

 

50Q = 370

 

Q = 37/5 <= should be integer; somethings wrong with the question.

 

ADD 40 to both sides:

 

50Q = 450

 

Q = 9

 

D = 9 - 4 = 5

 

N = 3*9 = 27
