given that (x-1) is a factor of 5x^3 - 9x^2 + 2x + a find the value of a.

it's a problem of factorising polynomial, what will be the value of a pls tell me..     :)

Hi Rodela;
I struggled with the answer to this for one hour.  I originally posted the incorrect answer.  When I finally had the correct answer, it was labeled PENDING REVIEW.  I am certain I have the correct answer.

Hi Parviz;
( x-1) ( 5x^3- 9x^2 + 2x +2 )
cannot be the result because (x)(5x3)=5x4
cannot be the result because (x)(-9x2)=-9x3
etc.
5x4 is not part of the original equation.
9x3 is not part of the original equation.
etc.

  My mistake it should have been:
 
    5X^3 - 9x^2 + 2X + 2 = ( X -1 ) ( 5X^2 - 4X - 2)
