Thanks for pointing out the error.  My answer was for horizontal compression instead of the requested vertical compression.  Note that for this problem, horizontal compression is not the same as vertical expansion and vice versa.  The issue of the meaning of "compression" here still remains.

Did you mean to say that compressing VERTICALLY is the same as expanding HORIZONTALLY?
