Help with word problem

Question

Ella, May, and Sue each pour 24 cups of lemonade for their lemonade stand. They sell 23 of the cups of lemonade to their friends. How many cups are left to sell?

 

Answer 1

Since each poured 24 cups and there are 3 people, multiply 24 by 3 to get the total number of cups poured.

 

Total number of cups poured = 24 x 3

                                          = 72

 

When they sell cups, they lose cups.  So you subtract the number of cups sold from the total of number of cups started with.

 

Number of cups left = 72 - 23

 

Now just perform the subtraction to get the number of cups left.
