Determine the required number of 10mm diameter MS bolts to hold two overlapping strips of metal against a total shearforce of 75.4kn if the allowable stress in shear is 120MPa.

The shearforce is

 

75.4 x 10³ N = 75400 N

 

 

The stress is

 

120000000 Pa

 

 

Use the formula

 

A = F / S

 

to find the cross-section area of the metal strips.

 

where:

F = shearforce

S = stress

A = cross-section area

 

Then once you have that area, use that area to determine the thickness of the metal sheets.  Once you know the thickness, use the appendix in your textbook to determine the number of bolts based on the thickness and required bolt size.
