Question

Three times as many children as adults attended a concert on Saturday. An adult's ticket cost $7 and a child's ticket cost $3. The theater collected a total of $6,000. How many people bought tickets?

Answer 1

3a = c (tickets sold ratio)

7a  + 3c = $6000 (ticket revenue equation)

 

Now plug in and solve.

 

7a + 3(3a) = 6000

7a + 9a = 6000

16a = 6000

a = 375

 

c = 3(375)

c = 1125

 

Check your work on equation 2.

 

7(375) + 3(1125) = 6000

2625 + 3375 = 6000

6000 = 6000

 

So 375 + 1125 = 1500 people attended.
